Artist & Illustrator Lisa Congdon

Artist and illustrator Lisa Congdon on The Stash Podcast

Welcome to our Season 2 finale episode of the podcast!

Artist and illustrator Lisa Congdon knows what it’s like to be a beginner.

To put her heart into her work on the canvas or page and to continue to do it day after day, even when the the creative energy isn’t there. She’s turned her inner calling to make art into an outward expression to share with others. This takes guts and grit and commitment to doing the work, even when it isn’t easy or sexy.

Everyone starts somewhere, and it could be easy to look at Lisa’s career today and assume that it came easily to her. But the truth is, it took years of hustling, of deepening her skills, and of finding her signature style. You see, Lisa is a self-taught artist with no formal training.

In our conversation Lisa recounts the story of her beginnings, from being a teacher and novice painter to moving into making art full-time and building a sustainable career as an artist.

Lisa shares how she worked to overcome her uncertainty and fear in the beginning, and how she had to rethink her priorities and creative focus after a recent burnout.

She speaks to how your relationship with creativity changes when you become a professional maker — and why seeking alternative forms of inspiration and maintaining personal creative work is so important to staying connected with your own creative energy.

Lisa also talks about how once she achieved a certain level of ability and steadiness in her career, a new discomfort and angst emerged. She began to ask some big questions like: does my work matter, what am I going to do next?

We dive into all of this, and more, including her tattoos, our current tv obsessions, and much more.
